Balticon 42 Best in Class (Novice) Workmanship

I debuted my 40K Sister Hospitaller at Balticon 42 in 2008. It was my first masquerade, and the first costume that I’d made on my own. I had spent months sewing, embroidering, and beading the dress. The front panel is entirely hand embroidered because I was crazy enough to go into that kind of detail right from the start, didn’t even think of doing it in applique, and I didn’t like the look of painted designs.

I was overwhelmed by my first masquerade and had no experience to tell which of the other costumers were competing in the Journeyman and Master divisions. By the time they went through all of the other Novice awards I had convinced myself that I hadn’t won anything at all and stopped paying attention. My husband had to give me a nudge to go up on stage, and I had no idea what I’d won until I checked the ribbons afterwards.

Happily, bringing this costume to Balticon also brought me to the attention of the Greater Columbia Fantasy Costumers’ Guild, the local ICG chapter, which promptly kidnapped me into their ranks.

At Balticon 51 in 2017 after two kids and losing 30lbs, I actually managed to fit back into the costume. On the horizon is a new 40K Sister of Battle but this time with armor instead of hoops.

Not worn in this photo are the long gloves with spikes attached to the fingers. Conventions tend to frown on those being worn on the main floor.

Adepta Sororitas was displayed in the costume exhibit at Costume Con 29. The 40K themed hat box on the ground is my storage box for most of the costume and accessories.
