An Angel in Paris was designed and shown at Costume Con 35 in Toronto as a Historical Interpretation in the Master Class, presented as an 18th century Victoria’s Secret model. Everything was designed as 1770s French undergarments to show off the collapsible steel pannier whose pattern and style was inspired by extant examples from the MET and Les Arts Décoratifs.

From the skin out, the chemise (c. 1750-1790) is made of linen with the pattern from Costume Close Up: Clothing Construction and Pattern 1750-1790.

The stays (c. 1750-1790) with the front lacing were drafted based on Diderot’s Encyclopédie, Plate 20 are made of linen and fully boned with reed.

The paniers d’aciers a charnieres (C. 1775- 1780) are styled after MET’s red pair and made of steel covered with red satin ribbon with red velvet support tapes.

The blue overskirt is silk organza and historically inspired but not accurate.

The wig is made entirely of foam and styled based on Jean-Jacques Caffieri’s beautiful bust of Madame de Luzy of the Comedie Francais. The wings are also made of foam with a foam core pvc understructure for support.

The clocked stockings can be found at Jas. Townsend and Son and the shoes are historical recreations by American Duchess c. 1760-1790.
